Facilitators of Learning
Debe holds both BS and MS degrees in mathematics from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as well as teaching certification in secondary mathematics from Eastern Illinois University. In 2009, Debe was trained in the pedagogy of The Algebra Project, an organization founded by Civil Rights leader Bob Moses. Since that time, Debe has continued to facilitate high school and college math classes with the perspective that mastering mathematics, especially algebra, is the ‘gateway to equality’ and should be accessible to all students. She has also worked as a consultant with The Algebra Project for Summer Induction Math camps in various locations throughout the US. In 2017, Debe moved from Illinois to Mansfield, Ohio to work with The Ohio State University Math Literacy Initiative (MLI). The MLI provides professional development grounded in the pedagogy of The Algebra Project for K-12 in-service math teachers. In addition to the MLI work, Debe teaches math and math-education courses at The Ohio State University.

Sara’s greatest joy as an educator is to build her students’ confidence as learners of mathematics. Sara is a veteran teacher with over 15 years of experience, having taught within the Chicago, New York, and Miami public school systems. After teaching for 7 years, Sara realized something was missing when trying to reach those students who have historically struggled with the traditional approach to learning mathematics. This began her work with The Algebra Project, founded by the late Civil Rights leader Bob Moses, that uses math literacy as an organizing tool to guarantee quality public school education for all children in the United States. Sara holds an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis and a graduate degree in Urban Education from Florida International University.
